Past Events

Deer Island Cleanup

Throughout the years, Deer Island has been a focus spot of many cleanup efforts. In partnership with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and OSPREY Initiative, the MSCCP hosted a volunteer powered cleanup in April of 2022 to tackle the trash and debris crisis on Deer Island.

Earth Day Celebration Cleanup

In honor of Earth Day, the MSCCP hosted cleanup events at locations such as the I.G. Levy Memorial Park in Pascagoula and the Biloxi Boardwalk. During these events, volunteers collected data on what type and how much trash they were removing. This data helps gather valuable information to help prevent future litter by educating the public on sustainable alternatives and preventative solutions.

Mardi Gras Cleanup Krewe

The Mississippi Coastal Cleanup & Plastic Free Gulf Coast partnered up to hit the streets for the Gulf Coast Carnival Mardi Gras Parade in Biloxi to help with post-festival cleanup. Every year, a huge amount of trash is generated by the annual carnival celebration that takes days to pick up. Volunteers constructed and designed the float to be a trash collection container. As our float followed the parade, the pickup of trash began immediately, decreasing the chance of trash items spreading into the nearby neighborhood communities and natural environment! Volunteers walked alongside and behind the float for almost 3 hours picking up over 3 tons of trash. The goal of the Cleanup Krewe float is to promote the incorporation of mindful, waste-free partying into one of our most anticipated traditions!

Monthly Cleanups

Monthly cleanups were a wonderful way for volunteers to stay involved year-round by participating in beach cleanup. These events took place at various locations across the Mississippi coast on a Saturday morning with a Site Captain present to lead the volunteers through the event. During these events, volunteers collected data on what type and how much trash they removed. Since 2019, there were 1,351 volunteers who participated in 32 cleanups removing over 5,000 pounds of trash and debris.

World Ocean Day Beach Cleanup

Across the globe, June 8th is recognized as World Ocean Day -- a day where community members come together in honor of the beautiful, majestic ocean that connects us all. The ocean is a miraculous ecosystem that provides us with more than we could ever imagine. From the air we breathe to the fish we enjoy, the ocean gives us her all. The Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Program has hosted a beach cleanup in honor of World Ocean Day bringing together volunteers that spend their moring removing trash and debris from a local beach area.
